The aim of the web indicators used in the Webometrics methodology is to provide reliable and comprehensive evaluations of the impact the volume of the Web content of universities’ activities and results has globally, i.e. the relevance and impact of their web publications. The Webometrics ranking of a university depends on the volume and quality of the available and transparent content this academic institution generates, from highly cited web publications to all other contents including reports, conferences, theses, seminars, digital libraries, and other publications of the respective university and its faculties, departments, researchers and students.

The first 26 places worldwide on the Webometrics world ranking are mostly held by US universities.
