Students of the Ecology and Environmental Protection Study Program at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the University of Banja Luka may soon have the opportunity to conduct research and prepare their master’s theses in Iceland, as well as participate in international summer schools, following discussions on establishing cooperation with Reykjavik University.

The possibilities for developing this cooperation were discussed on 29 June 2026 at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics during the visit of David Finger, PhD, Associate Professor at the Department of Engineering of Reykjavik University and an expert in sustainable development, renewable energy sources, and environmental protection.

During the meeting, both sides expressed a strong interest in establishing formal cooperation between the two higher education institutions with the aim of implementing joint research and educational activities, as well as involving experts in biology, ecology, and environmental protection in international projects.

Particular emphasis was placed on the benefits that future cooperation could bring to students through field research opportunities, knowledge exchange, and participation in joint scientific projects, enabling them to gain valuable international experience.

It was also announced that, beginning with the next academic year, academic staff and associates of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics will become actively involved in this cooperation, creating conditions for the implementation of joint research projects and the further strengthening of international collaboration in the fields of natural sciences and environmental protection.

It should be noted that Dr. Finger already maintains successful cooperation with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Banja Luka through the Erasmus+ program. His research focuses on interdisciplinary studies that connect energy systems, natural sciences, and environmental protection.

The meeting was attended by Associate Professor Dino Hasanagić, PhD, Vice Dean for Teaching at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics; Prof. Dragana Šnjegota, PhD, Head of the Biology Study Program; Prof. Dragojlo Golub, PhD, Head of the Ecology and Environmental Protection Study Program; and Prof. Petar Gvero, PhD, from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Banja Luka.
