Institute for genetic resources birthday celebration

University of Banja LukaGeneral

On May 23, 2017, the Institute for Genetic Resources organized a celebration on the premise of the Rectorate, marking its 8th anniversary, as well as the International Fascination of Plants Day. The celebration gathered the management of the Institute and the University respectively, along with the representatives of line ministries in the Government of the Republic of Srpska and administration of the City of Banja Luka.

The manager of the Institute, Prof. Gordana Djuric, pointed out to the need to draw attention to an ever-growing issue of protection of biodiversity and preserved areas in terms of viable development, adding that this Institute was the only one of the kind in the former Yugoslavia to have deposited samples from a gene bank into the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway.

After the addresses of the hosts and distinguished guests, there was a series of lectures on the respective topics of preserved areas and the roles of horticulture for the City of Banja Luka, as well as an award-giving ceremony to individuals and institutions that helped develop the Institute.
