Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy

The idea to establish a faculty in Banja Luka at which architecture and civil engineering would be studied dates back to 1980. Still, specific activities in this regard started only when the Ministry of Urbanism, Housing-Public Utilities and Civil Engineering of the Republic of Srpska deployed a working group in March 1994 tasked with drafting a feasibility study for establishing and providing working conditions of the then Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering in Banja Luka.

Soon thereafter, the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture formed a Commission to assess the fulfilment of conditions for the beginning of work of the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the University of Banja Luka. This Commission made a positive report that was adopted, after which the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska, at its session of 28 August 1995, issued the Decision on Establishing the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the University of Banja Luka (Official Gazette, 18/95). Pursuant to the Decision of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture No UP-I-02-541 of 20 May 1996, the Faculty met the requirements to start operating in the academic year 1996-97.

The Department of Civil Engineering took in the first generation of students in 1996, and the following year classes also started at the Department of Architecture. The Statute and the Rulebook on Doctoral Studies were drafted in May 1997.

The University of Banja Luka approved the advanced curriculum for the Department of Architecture by its Decision No 05-214/04 of 16 July 2004 and the reformed curriculum for the Department of Civil Engineering by its Decision No 05-494/06 of 29 September 2006. The first generation of students enrolled in the Department of Geodesy in 2007.

Starting with the academic year 2007-2008, the curricula for all three departments were aligned with the principles of Bologna Declaration.

Graduate studies in Architecture and Urbanism started in the academic year 2001-2002, and in Civil Engineering in the academic year 2005-2006. The first generation of students enrolled in the second-cycle Geodesy Study Programme in the academic year 2013-14.

The Faculty currently conducts classes taking on the 4 + 1 + 3 model, at the first-cycle studies (study programmes: Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy), at the second-cycle studies (study programmes: Architecture and Urbanism, Civil Engineering, Geodesy) and the multidisciplinary Energy Efficiency in Buildings Study Programme, at which classes are taught in cooperation with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Banja Luka, and at the third-cycle multidisciplinary studies of the licensed Renewable Sources of Energy and Environmental Engineering Study Programme, where classes are taught in cooperation with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Faculty of Technology of the University of Banja Luka.
