Learning objectives
Introducing students to the structure of plant cells (cytology), plant tissues (histology), anatomy and morphology of vegetative and generative organs (organography) and types of reproduction of plants. Training students for independent work with a microscope and preparation of microscopic slides.
Learning outcomes
The acquired knowledge in the Botany I includes an understanding of the basic structure and functions of plants. Students gain a base for a clear understanding of general role of plants in forest ecosystems.
Content
Introduction to botany. Cytology. Plant cell-structure and chemical composition. Microscopy, microscopic preparations. Cellular organelles- structure and role. Cell wall and membranes. Histology. Division of plant tissues. Meristemic tissues. Permanent tissue systems. The structure and role of permanent tissues. Organography - the structure of vegetative plant organs. Shoot and root- structure, function and metamorphosis. Leaf-categories of leaves, structure, function and metamorphoses of the leaf. Reproduction of plants. Types of reproduction. Flower and inflorescences. Pollination and fertilization. Fruit and seed.

Evaluation and grading
The exam is in form of writing exam and orally exam. Colloquiums and tests are organized during the semester. The final exam is taken practically (exercises) and orally (lectures).
