The Day of the Faculty of Philology Marked

Celebration dedicated to the Day of the Faculty of Philology of the University of Banja Luka - St. Cyril and Methodius, was held on 24 May 2022.

Rector of the University of Banja Luka Prof. Radoslav Gajanin, PhD, says that it is a pleasure on this day to recall on all the successes of the Faculty of Philology.

,,We are satisfied with the teaching process in the study programmes at the Faculty of Philology'', the rector said and stressed that preparations are underway for the new Sinology Study Programme to be launched, where students will be able to study the Chinese language.

As the rector pointed out, at this faculty, students of the University of Banja Luka are given the opportunity to additionally, through courses, study foreign languages, and they also offer Serbian language courses for foreigners.

,,The Turkish language has also started to be taught here a few months ago, so that, simply, whatever language you think of, you can study it at the Faculty of Philology", Rector Gajanin said.

,,The plan is to enrol more foreign students who do not speak Serbian in the forthcoming period, and our Faculty of Philology will organize Serbian language courses for those students'', the rector pointed out and explained that the plan is for foreign students at the Faculty of Philology to learn Serbian up to level B1.

Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Srpska Natalija Trivić, PhD, said at the celebration of the Day of the Faculty of Philology that it is necessary that both the University and the relevant ministry nurture the Serbian language and script and educate future generations.

She stated that the Day of the Faculty of Philology is a good occasion to analyse and summarize the good results achieved by this faculty.
,,The conference organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Culture `Identities and Heritage` is of immeasurable importance for both the professional and the general public of the Republic of Srpska”, Trivić said and emphasized that the conference had significant public reflections on cultural heritage, identity and why it is important that we all nurture the Serbian language and script.
Dean of the Faculty of Philology of the University of Banja Luka Prof. Biljana Babić, PhD, said that the Day of Saints Cyril and Methodius is also marked as the Day of the Faculty of Philology in many other educational institutions around the Slavic world, emphasizing that national philology is of great importance for every nation and every state.

During this ceremony, held at the premises of the Faculty of Philology, awards were presented to individuals and institutions who have contributed to the development of this faculty with their selfless work and commitment. The plaque of the Faculty of Philology was presented to the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Srpska, Greek Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina Dimitros Papandreou and others, and the certificates of appreciation were granted to the Banja Luka Grammar School, the Faculty of Political Science and the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Banja Luka. The faculty also granted numerous certificates of appreciation, as well as awards to the best graduates who successfully completed their studies in the academic year 2020/2021.

The event was attended by the deans and of University members, Vice-Rector for Scientific Research and Development Prof. Miroslav Malinović, PhD, and Vice-Rector for Material and Human Resources Prof. Dalibor Kesić, PhD. Prof. Sofija Miloradović, PhD, from the Institute for the Serbian Language of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, gave a speech on this occasion.

The Faculty of Philology was founded in 2009, after which the decision to establish and independent institution by joining the philology-based study programmes then offered by the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Banja Luka. The Faculty of Philology seeks to continue to develop its human resources and logistics capacity in the areas of education and research, in order to bequeath to the generations to come a quality, operational, nationally accountable, and internationally recognized and networked system of philological studies.
