Learning objectives
Introduction of the principles of rock mechanics in engineering practice. Understanding the properties of rocks and rock masses and existing boundary conditions. Selection of appropriate laboratory and field tests in order to obtain the necessary parameters. Application of methods and analysis in the design of buildings in rock masses.
Learning outcomes
The student is able to describe the rock mass, to select and conduct field and laboratory tests in order to determine the necessary parameters. He is able to define the load-bearing capacity and deformability of the rock mass. The student is ready to analyze the stability of rock slopes and to dimension the necessary stabilization measures
Content
Introduction. Description and classification of rock mass. Tectonic deformations and erosion of rocks. Index and physical properties of rocks. Mechanical properties of rocks and rock masses. Analysis and design in rock mechanics. Excavations in rock masses. Mechanisms of instability in surface and underground excavations in rock masses. Rock mass stabilization techniques. Methods of testing rock masses in the laboratory and in the field. Stresses and methods of their measurement. Slope stability in rock. Application of rock mechanics to foundation and tunnel construction problems.
Teaching Methods
Classroom lectures and practical exercises. Preparation of annual tasks in consultation with an associate. Laboratory and field work.

Evaluation and grading
The independent annual assignment is defended during the semester in terms of lectures, exercises or consultations. The condition for taking the colloquium is the defended annual task with the part of the material belonging to it. Students who do not pass the colloquia during the semester, take the integral part of the exam, scored by the total number of points of both colloquia. Each of the tests is considered successful if the student achieves a minimum of 51% of the points provided for the knowledge test. The table below shows the percentages that can be won for individual activities and knowledge tests.
Specific remarks
The condition for taking the exam is that the annual task has been done and defended. If a student makes more than 3 absences, he is obliged to re-enroll the subject.
