Learning objectives
Acquiring knowledge about the socio-geographic characteristics of the rural area with an emphasis on the Republic of Srpska (spatial distribution and structural features of the population, settlement system, typological features of the household, property size, ownership relations, physical and social infrastructure, development processes, indicators of the level of development). Adoption of methodology and research techniques of socio-geographical indicators of rural areas in the function of development planning. Observing development opportunities and limitations. Finding adequate measures of revitalization and more efficient spatial-functional organization of rural areas.
Learning outcomes
Acquisition of complex knowledge about the socio-geographical characteristics of the rural area with an emphasis on the Republic of Srpska. Adoption and use of scientific terminology from the field of social geography. Mastering the methods and techniques of processing demographic, socioeconomic and socio-geographical indicators, systematic geographic analysis, tabular, graphic-illustrative and cartographic presentation of results. Developing abilities for independent analytical and critical approach to research. Mastery of professional subject matter, methods and techniques, application of geographical knowledge and skills in the function of planning sustainable development of rural areas. Distinguishing prosperous and problematic rural areas on the basis of socio-geographical indicators. Defining adequate measures for the spatial development of rural areas.

1. The concept of rural socio-geographic space. 2. Socio-geographical concepts of rural development, approaches to study, methodology. 3. Integrating factors of socio-geographic development of the rural area. 4. Socio-geographic spatial system – basic life functions in rural areas. 5. The influence of contemporary socio-geographical processes on the transformation and differentiation of rural areas and the formation of social groups. 6. Agro-social systems and structures. 7. Agrarian space in countries of social system transition. 8. Demographic and settlement characteristics of the rural area in the valorization and planning of sustainable rural development. 9. Geospatial consequences of spatial movement and socioeconomic restructuring of the population. 10. Socio-economic and cultural interaction between rural and urban areas. 11. Contemporary socio-geographic trends in the environment and Europe in the context of rural development. 12. Contemporary spatial-functional organization of rural areas of developed countries. 13. Rural area of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Republic of Srpska) – characteristics of socio-geographical development and spatial-functional organization. 14. Characteristics of the agro-social system in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republic of Srpska. 15. Socio-geographic characteristics of the rural area of the Republic of Srpska in the function of complex valorization and development of the rural area, revitalization and sustainability of problem areas.
Teaching Methods
Presentation, discussion, statistical, graphic-illustrative and cartographic methods, fieldwork, analytical data processing, presentation and analysis of research results.

Class attendance – 5 points; Test – 20 points; Seminar paper (presentation) – 15 points; Oral exam – 60 points.
